Unique Audience - What is it?

"Unique Audience" is the total number of visitors who visit a website or use an application at least once in a given period. Multiple visits to the website or application within the same time frame are only counted once.

Unique Audience helps provide a picture of the reach of a particular website, whereas 'visits' help provide a picture of frequency and engagement.

Also referred to as "Unique Visitors."

Part 2: Put Your Website to Work

Align Website Goals with Business Objectives

All too often, a discussion of the company’s website centers on copy and graphical input. Those elements are important, but the real place to start is with a crystal clear understanding of your company’s business objectives.

By business objectives we mean those things that must be accomplished for the company to stay in business---and grow. Don’t make the mistake of lapsing into vague objectives such as “raising awareness.”

Next, break down each objective into the series of actions that are required to achieve it.  Ask yourself which of these actions can be accomplished or facilitated by the website. This is the tricky but fun part where you force yourself to think differently about your website. What are the opportunities, for example, for the website to help generate a proprietary, generate valuable insights from website visitors, or reduce sales and support costs?

Focus on brainstorming new ideas on how to put your website to work and don’t limit yourself to current website capabilities.

Be sure to think about the business processes this will impact and who will be affected so that you can be sure to involve them in the process. One of the main reasons that online marketing initiatives fail is because there is no follow-up from the rest of the organization – so make sure this doesn’t happen to you.

Dynamic url

A  dynamic URL is the address of a dynamic web page.

In contrast to static URLs, in which the contents of the Web page do not change unless the changes are coded into the HTML, Dynamic  URLs are generated from specific queries to a site's database. Dynamic URLs often contain the following characters: ?, &, %, +, =, $, cgi-bin, .cgi.

Part 1: Put Your Website to Work

Create a Web Strategy that Means Business

Take a look at your website. If it’s just standing around in cyberspace looking pretty then you may be missing opportunities to build your business.

This is the first of a series of posts focused on “Putting Your Website to Work." They will help you evaluate your website, set objectives, create a strategy, guide execution, and analyze the results, all with the purpose of creating a website that helps achieve your business objectives.

Competition is tougher than ever so companies want to leverage every available tool to grow their business. But while many savvy companies pay a great deal of attention to hiring sales people, developing marketing programs,  managing costs, etc., they often overlook an effective and cost efficient tool that’s right in front of them: their websites.

Why? Unless it’s an active ecommerce site, most companies treat their website as little more than a brochure or business card.  Once they get their website up and running, they breathe a sigh of relief and consider it ‘done,’ never to be touched again, or, at least, anytime soon. And that’s too bad.

What exactly is a working website?
A hardworking website that’s focused on business goals and integrated into a company’s internal business process can help both B2B and B2C companies solve vexing business problems and achieve growth. Gone are the days when a website served solely as a communications vehicle.

Sure, selling products and services is an obvious application. But beyond ecommerce, websites can help companies conduct research, and gather feedback, lower sales and support costs, strengthen customer relationships, generate leads, foster internal collaboration, build a proprietary database, and more.

Ready to put your website to work?
First, take a good hard look at your current website using the website evaluation tool---click on the attachment at the bottom of this post.

If you can answer yes to most questions, then congratulations, and keep up the good work!

For those of you who answer no to most questions, don’t worry. Over the next few posts we’ll guide you through setting objectives, creating a strategy (that includes identifying your target, offerings, key benefits & differentiation) and putting everything into an action plan. Then we’ll give you pointers on how to execute your plan and analyze the results.
